The modern automobile has been an integral part of day to day lives for several decades, however the history of automobiles dates back to the early 1800’s with the design of the first car powered by an internal combustion engine by François Isaac de Rivaz in 1807.
Since then, the history of the automobile can be divided into several eras, each with their unique characteristics and each with the introduction of various automobile manufacturers. This site provides some insight into the world of automobiles. Below is a brief history of the automobile to provide context for the rest of the site.
Evolution of the Engine in Automobiles
Automobile engines date as far back as the 17th century which began with the evolution of steam powered engines. Although created for a toy for the Chinese Emperor in 1672 and not nearly large enough to transport people, the first steam powered automobile was built by Ferdinand Verbiest.
Steam engines, designed for self propelled vehicles large enough to transport people, date back to the 18th century with the creation of a steam powered artillery tractor in 1770 and 1771. By 1801 a full sized steam powered vehicle was driving the roads of Camborne, Great Britain.
By the 19th century, the automobile was evolving into steam powered buggies, wagons and carriages with the peak of their evolution in the 1930’s.
In the 1830’s the first electric motor was constructed and evolved over time until the world’s first electric car was developed in 1888.
